Only a new sodding Deep Purple album, that’s what! When I started this blog some two and a half years ago, reviewing a brand new Deep Purple studio album was something I really hoped I’d one day get the opportunity to do – and, in just a couple of months time, I will get my wish. It’s amazing to think that the new album will arrive a whopping forty-five years after the band’s debut hit the shelves – and I have to say that I have been very encouraged by the brief but enticing teasers that have been released so far; I hope that the epic feel they indicate, and the vintage hallmarks that they bear, prove to be faithful harbingers of what is to come.
Only Ian Paice, of course, has been ever present throughout Deep Purple’s recording and performing career. When he laid down his tracks on Shades at the tender age of nineteen, could he have begun to imagine where it would all lead? Let’s hope this next chapter in the remarkable odyssey proves to be one of the best, and that the first Deep Purple album to be released since the passing of Jon Lord will be blessed with a touch of his brilliant spirit.
