World Cup Fever: I

So, with England’s qualification hopes hanging in the balance, I guess it would be tempting fate to indulge in too much schadenfreude over Spain’s calamitous early exit from the tournament. Still, in spite of the Three Lions’ defeat against Italy, I remain cautiously optimistic. I thought we generally played pretty well the other night, despite a few negatives (disappointing dead ball delivery, and a slight sense of panickiness whenever Italy started to put some passes together in the final third). It would be really nice to see Wazza finally deliver on the biggest stage – I don’t want to be down on him as a lot of fans are; if he starts, let’s hope he can silence a few critics – but I thought we looked threatening going forward, and was impressed with much of our attacking play. So, hopefully we’ll have enough to see off Uruguay, who will either be shell-shocked or come out all guns blazing, following their defeat at the hands of the quite splendid Costa Rica. If we can start as positively as we did against Italy, I’m fairly confident we’ll be able to put the two-times World champions to the sword. Winding up a certain mercurial Liverpool forward and getting him sent off might help, as well 😉
