So, from an England fan’s point of view, it’s been a World Cup of abject, unutterable misery – we actually managed to surpass the crushing mediocrity and ineptitude of South Africa 2010. I was really hoping we’d transcend it. But, from a pure entertainment point of view, the tournament continues to be pretty bloody fab. Who would have believed it? Costa Rica in the quarter finals! They whose most famed achievement prior to the tournament was beating Scotland in a group game at Italia 90. The tournament has also been lit up by a terrific Chile side who I was sorry to see go out to the hosts on penalties. I was also a bit miffed about Mexico going out to the Dutch yesterday – but it was a thrilling finale to another gripping game. The team I’m really pulling for now is the US – should be a fascinating encounter against the super talented but not exactly firing on all cylinders yet Belgians.
As for Uruguay, I can’t pretend I’m devastated to see the back of them. So long, and fangs for the memories!
